Staying Connected, One Message at a Time

School has begun and our morning routines have turned to packing lunches for our kids. Sandwiches, fruit, chips and snacks are placed neatly inside their lunch boxes. But among these essentials, thereโ€™s one little gesture that we can add that could make all the difference–a lunch note. Whether you scribble a quick hello on a scrap of paper or write a heartfelt message, lunch notes are more than just words tucked between sandwiches and chips. Theyโ€™re tiny bridges that connect us to our children even when we are apart.

A Tradition of Notes

I love to write little messages to my children or husband to put in their lunches or even random places around the house where they will find them. Itโ€™s a way for me to let them know I am thinking about them and hoping they are having a great day. And in this fast-moving world of busy schedules, a quick note is a little reminder that I love and support them.

Lunch notes have been my favorite way to write notes to my family. I have used Post-it notes, scraps of paper, to-do list pads, bought cute ones to print out–whatever was available to write a quick note on and put it in their lunch box. I soon learned how to create my own lunch notes on the computer for holidays and fun themes that I knew my kids would like. Each note with a message of love and encouragement in the hope that during the hustle of school and a noisy cafeteria or lunch space, they hear that they are seen and cherished and given a little comfort if it has been a hard day.

The Importance of Staying Connected

When our children leave for school, they enter a world beyond our control and direct influence. They face challenges, make decisions, and experience emotions that can sometimes feel overwhelming. Maintaining a connection, even in small ways, becomes vital. Lunch notes are a unique way to nurture our bond with them, reinforcing feelings of security and belonging. And in an age of digital communication, handwritten notes from us can add a personal touch that really makes a difference in their lives.
