Journaling Holiday Memories – Halloween

Come with me as I journal about my Halloween memories and watch as I create a Haunted House…

The Haunted House

I love Halloween, a Happy Halloween that is! I like happy jack-o-lanterns, silly witches, smiling ghosts, funny Frankensteins, dancing skeletons, fuzzy spiders–all the happy characters! Growing up, one of my favorite Halloween traditions was watching โ€œItโ€™s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.โ€ It only aired once during the holiday, so we had to look for it in the TV Guide magazine and plan to be home so we could watch it. Today, you just speak into your remote and it finds it for you to watch any day, any time!

My memory was a full moon, but a quick Google search of the moon on Halloween 1976…

The first Halloween I can remember was when my family lived in Texas. My older sister and I were swinging at the park of our elementary school, passing the time before it was time to go trick-or-treating. I remember the anticipation and excitement of the whole day. The moon was starting to get brighter in the sky. My memory was of a full moon, but a quick Google search of the moon on Halloween in 1976 or 1977 says there wasnโ€™t a full moon on either night of those years. It was either a waxing or waning gibbous! A little disappointing, but I can live with that! I don’t remember anything about trick-or-treating that night, but the feelings of that Halloween night have stayed with me and has made Halloween a happy time for me every year.

I loved dressing up when I was younger, so Halloween was always exciting. My costumes were usually a princess or dancer or something with a happy theme. One year, my mom made me a Roaring โ€˜20’s flapper dress made of yellow satin with long, black fringe. She even made me a black sequined headband with a tall black feather on it. It was one of my favorite costumes. Dressing up days are long gone now, but I do bring out my black witchโ€™s hat to hand out candy!

I think I inherited this from my dad because he loves them too.

Decorating for Halloween is my dressing up now! One of my favorite Halloween decorations is haunted houses. I think I inherited this from my dad because he loves them too. We both have birthdays close to Halloween, so I think we just love the whole Autumn feel and month of October!

My first memory of being intrigued with haunted houses was in grade school doing Halloween crafts. I drew a spooky night sky with a black haunted house and yellow windows to show the lights were on. There was a large moon and a witch flying in front of it and jack-o-lanterns sitting on a fence. The whole scene around the haunted house made me smile. Iโ€™m not a fan of going through haunted houses but the mystery of them is still so fun to me!

Doing this paper art Haunted House has brought back so many great memories of Halloween! My brother suggested it should be my next project with Halloween coming up, so I give him full credit! Iโ€™m so glad he did! My heart is full of all these wonderful memories again! They are in writing now and documented forever!
